Medical Call turns into Technical Rescue

Friday 02/09/18 at 0852 hours, Company 2 was alerted as the engine company to responded with units from Company 4 (PFVRS) and Company 10 (Calvert ALS) to 6101 Ray Norwood Road for the long fall.

Engine 22 was first to arrive on scene finding the 67 year old female patient in the cellar of the home 8-10 feet below grade, patient fell through the accesses hole in the floor while getting out of bed.

With the only access to the cellar being only a wooden ladder tac nailed to the wooden floor joist, Engine 22 started additional resources bringing Squad 2 and the South Duty Chief (Chief 2 Alpha) to their location. Chief 2A established the command of the now medic local turned rescue and added MSP Aviation Trooper 7 to the call, as requested by the medical group.

Patient was removed from the cellar via stokes basket, rope and manpower. Companies operated just over 30 minutes. Challenges met and overcome by the crews included cold temperatures, patient location, lighting and air monitoring. Patient was flown to a nearby area trauma center to insure best possible care. Job well down by all the crews.
